BASYNAOS: SYNAOS starts research project with DFKI

20. April 2021

Note: An earlier version of this press release referred to “SYNA.OS LOGISTICS.” The terms have since changed and have been replaced by “SYNAOS Intralogistics Management Platform (IMP)” in this press release.

  • BaSynaOS is a new research project that SYNAOS is carrying out together with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).
  • The aim of the project is to provide uniform access to planning-relevant real-time data for all assets.
  • Assets are networkable components in logistics and production. These include mobile robots, transport vehicles and machines, but also the products themselves.
  • Manufacturer-specific interfaces make it difficult or prevent the exchange of information. Standardised interfaces that enable cross-manufacturer administration are therefore required.

Hanover, April 20, 2021. The software company SYNAOS has started a partnership with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). As part of the BaSynaOS satellite project, the two project partners want to optimize the exchange of information in logistics and manufacturing. Machines and robots, for example, which come from different manufacturers, should all be able to be orchestrated.

Automation, digitization and globalization are making logistics centers and factories ever more flexible. Production conditions are changing, which is why rapid adaptability is required. The key to success is the complete digitization of business and production processes.

In order for the many components involved in logistics and production — such as mobile robots, transport vehicles and machines — to be smoothly coordinated, these so-called assets must be described in a standardized manner. In addition, administrative systems must be perfectly coordinated. SYNAOS wants to manage and optimize all logistics and production holistically and adaptively one day. Major steps have already been taken in this direction — but there is still a lot of potential in the future.

Exploit BASYX's potential

To date, SYNAOS has orchestrated various manufacturer systems in intralogistics — in the future, the entire factory process is to be controlled. For this purpose, SYNAOS planning algorithms are connected to the BaSYX open-source middleware, for example, to record the status of systems and incorporate the data into planning. “The aim is to holistically control not only the transport systems, but also the facilities to which they bring the material,” explains project manager Dr. Christoph Schinner. The middleware makes it possible to take this important step. The project duration of BaSynaOS is two years and ends in February 2023.

BASYS and BASYNAOS

If BaSynaOS is the satellite, BaSYS 4.2 is the planet. In the research project (www.basys40.de), DFKI, together with 14 partners from research and industry, implements central Industry 4.0 concepts and standards. The aim is to develop a basic system for production plants. It should enable the efficient changeability of a production process — this represents a central challenge of Industry 4.0.

SYNAOS is revolutionizing logistics

SYNAOS is a pioneer in connecting autonomous transport vehicles, forklifts and mobile robots in intralogistics. The SYNAOS IMP serves as a conductor for the fleet, masterfully steering up to 1000 vehicles. Holistic fleet optimization increases efficiency and significantly reduces costs. No other solution on the market delivers comparable results.

That's SYNAOS

SYNAOS has been around since 2018 and is based in the heart of Hanover. The company is growing rapidly and already employs over 80 people — including proven specialists in artificial intelligence, machine learning and algorithms. SYNAOS uses the power of complexity and develops smart software solutions for logistics centers and factories. A top-class advisory board and strong partners support SYNAOS in the practical implementation of its innovative ideas. The first reference customers include Volkswagen AG and online retailer Connox.

The three SYNAOS founders Dr. Wolfgang Hackenberg (CEO), Dr. Lennart Bochmann (CPO) and Tobias Gagern (CTO) have gained years of experience in the automotive industry and in the IT environment. This valuable know-how is now fully flowing into SYNAOS.
